  7. This text file provides information you should know about 
  8. this version of Diskeeper.
  9.  
  10.  
  11. TRIALWARE INFORMATION
  12. =====================
  13.  
  14. 1.  This copy of Diskeeper is a full-featured version with
  15.     all the functionality of the retail product.  The only 
  16.     difference between this and the retail version is that
  17.     this version will expire 30 days after you install it.
  18.  
  19. 2.  No live telephone support is provided with this trialware
  20.     version.  However, any questions can be sent via e-mail to 
  21.     DKNT_SUPPORT@EXECUTIVE.COM.  All questions will be promptly 
  22.     answered.
  23.  
  24. 3.  For information about purchasing Diskeeper, including volume 
  25.     discounts, contact your reseller, or contact Executive Software

  31. PLATFORMS AND OPERATING SYSTEM VERSIONS SUPPORTED
  32. =================================================
  33.  
  34. This version of Diskeeper is supported on Intel x86 platforms 
  35. running Windows NT 4.0 builds 1381 and higher.  
  36.  
  37.  
  38. MAJOR CHANGES IN DISKEEPER 4.0
  39. ==============================
  40.  
  41. The following major additions have been made to Diskeeper since
  42. the previous version released to the public (Version 3.0 Build 
  43. 172):
  44.  
  45. 1.  This version of Diskeeper introduces Boot-Time Paging File
  46.     Fragmentation Reduction.  This allows Diskeeper to reduce
  47.     or eliminate paging file fragmentation.
  48.  
  49. 2.  The Boot-Time Directory Consolidation option under the 
  50.     Special Tools menu has been changed to Boot-Time Defragmenter.
  51.     The dialog box displayed when this option is selected includes 
  52.     the option to Reduce Paging File Fragmentation.  This option 
  53.     is not selected by default.  The same dialog box also includes 
  54.     the option to Consolidate Directories, which is also not 
  55.     enabled by default.
  56.  
  57.     When you select Reduce Paging File Fragments, Diskeeper checks 
  58.     for a recent fragmentation analysis.  If one has been run, it
  59.     examines the analysis to see if contiguous space exists for
  60.     paging file defragmentation.  If an analysis has not been run 
  61.     recently, Diskeeper prompts to ask if an analysis should be 
  62.     run.  The analysis is necessary before running the Paging File 
  63.     Fragmentation Reduction feature.

  66. MINOR CHANGES IN DISKEEPER 4.0
  67. ==============================
  68.  
  69. The following changes have been made to Diskeeper since the 
  70. previous version released to the public (Version 3.0 Build 
  71. 172):
  72.  
  73. 1.  The date and time of a saved fragmentation analysis is 
  74.     now shown when a saved analysis is displayed.
  75.  
  76. 2.  An icon is now displayed in the Windows NT taskbar when 
  77.     Diskeeper is actively running on a partition.
  78.  
  79. 3.  Fixes have been made to the Set It and Forget It 
  80.     scheduling mechanism to allow Diskeeper to run on the 
  81.     same day a schedule is specified.  In previous versions, 
  82.     if a Set It and Forget It job was scheduled to run 
  83.     Everyday from 10:00 to 12:00, and the current time was 
  84.     9:00, the Diskeeper job would not actually start running
  85.     until 10:01 the following day.  This has been corrected.
  86.  
  87. 4.  Several access violation bugs have been fixed.
  88.  
  89. 5.  Checks have been added to Diskeeper 4.0 to prevent it 
  90.     from running on Windows NT 5.0.  This is because Diskeeper 
  91.     does not currently support the new NTFS and FAT32 file 
  92.     systems.
  93.  
  94. 6.  Checks have been added to prevent Diskeeper 4.0 from 
  95.     running on FAT32 partitions under Windows NT 4.0.
  96.  
  97. 7.  Changes have been made to allow Diskeeper to release memory 
  98.     that was previously used for the graphic display.
  99.  
  100. 8.  The Boot-Time Directory Consolidation feature now supports 
  101.     removable media with cluster sizes up to and including 4096 
  102.     bytes.
  103.  
  104. 9.  The opening splash screen now displays correctly in 256 
  105.     color mode.
  106.  
  107.  
  108. KNOWN INCOMPATIBILITIES IN THIS RELEASE
  109. =======================================
  110.  
  111. 1.  Diskeeper for Windows NT is not compatible with systems 
  112.     using the DPT Smart Cache III controller, unless Service 
  113.     Pack 1, 2 or 3 for Windows NT 4.0  has been installed.  Do 
  114.     not run Diskeeper on systems using the DPT Smart Cache 
  115.     III controller until you install Service Pack 1, 2 or 3 on 
  116.     your Windows NT system.
  117.  
  118. 2.  The on-screen Diskeeper Boot-time Directory Consolidation 
  119.     progress information cannot be viewed on your monitor if 
  120.     you are using a Diamond Stealth Viper video card or any 
  121.     other video card that does not support Windows NT boot-time 
  122.     display.  You can still, however, record a summary file 
  123.     during the Boot-Time Directory Consolidation.  See the 
  124.     Diskeeper Help system for more information on the Boot-Time 
  125.     Summary File.
  126.  
  127. 3.  Diskeeper 4.0 is not compatible with anti-virus products
  128.     that check each file when the file is opened.  This behavior,
  129.     found in McAfee and Norton anti-virus tools (as well as 
  130.     others), has been known to conflict with the file movement 
  131.     methods used by Diskeeper.  To prevent a Windows NT "bug 
  132.     check" crash, it may be necessary to disable the "active file
  133.     scan" options of these products during a defragmentation run.
  134.  
  135.  
  136. KNOWN RESTRICTIONS IN THIS RELEASE
  137. ==================================
  138.  
  139. 1.  At times, the View menu Refresh option to update the tree
  140.     view of the network computers may not reflect the current
  141.     network.  This is due to network communication limitations
  142.     in Windows NT.
  143.  
  144. 2.  You cannot use the Network Scheduler to schedule 
  145.     defragmentation on a computer to which you are currently
  146.     connected.  Use the Partition Scheduler option to schedule 
  147.     defragmentation of partitions on the machine you are 
  148.     connected to -- use the Network Scheduler option to 
  149.     schedule machines you are not connected to.
  150.  
  151.     This means you must be connected to a machine other than
  152.     your local computer (by clicking on a remote computer 
  153.     in the Diskeeper network tree view display) if you want 
  154.     to use the Network Scheduler to schedule your local 
  155.     computer.
  156.  
  157. 3.  Due to Windows NT security issues, it is necessary for you
  158.     to have Administrator privileges on both the local machine
  159.     and any remote computers upon which you set Diskeeper 
  160.     schedules.  Your account on the remote computer must also
  161.     have the same password as your account on the local machine.
  162.  
  163. 4.  If a remote computer is shut down while Diskeeper Server is
  164.     connected to that computer, you will be unable to re-connect 
  165.     Diskeeper to any other computers, including your local 
  166.     computer.  It may be necessary in such circumstances to use
  167.     the Windows NT Task Manager to end the Diskeeper task.
  168.     After doing this, Diskeeper will operate properly.
  169.  
  170. 5.  On very large partitions, Diskeeper may be unable to analyze
  171.     or defragment the files on the partition, due to memory 
  172.     limitations.  The exact values for this are determined on a 
  173.     case-by-case basis.  The size of the partition, the cluster
  174.     size of the partition, the number of files, the degree of
  175.     fragmentation, and other factors affect the amount of system
  176.     memory used by Diskeeper.  For example, if a partition exceeds
  177.     60 GB in size or contains more than 9 million files, system
  178.     memory requirements can exceed 1 GB. 
  179.  
  180.  
  181. REQUIRED PRIVILEGES
  182. ===================
  183.  
  184. You must be a member of the Administrators group to install and 
  185. operate Diskeeper.
  186.  
  187.  
  188. INSTALLING DISKEEPER 
  189. ====================
  190.  
  191. Follow these steps to install Diskeeper:
  192.  
  193. 1.  From Windows NT Explorer or File Manager, double click on
  194.     SETUP.EXE in the directory where this text file resides.
  195.  
  196. 2.  Read the information displayed in the Setup Installation 
  197.     Wizard boxes and click the "Next" button as appropriate.
  198.  
  199. 3.  In the "Choose Destination Location" dialog box, either 
  200.     accept the default installation location, or click the 
  201.     "Browse" button to specify a different disk and/or 
  202.     directory.  If you specify a directory that does not exist, 
  203.     the setup program will create it for you.  Click the 
  204.     "Next" button after specifying a disk and directory, or to 
  205.     accept the default installation location.
  206.  
  207. 4.  The installation offers you the opportunity to register
  208.     Diskeeper on Executive Software's Web Site.  
  209.  
  210. 5.  After a short period of copying files, the installation is 
  211.     complete.
  212.  
  213.  
  214. UNINSTALLING DISKEEPER
  215. ======================
  216.  
  217. Follow these steps to remove Diskeeper from your computer:
  218.  
  219. 1.  From Control Panel, double click "Add/Remove Programs".
  220.  
  221. 2.  Click the "Install/Uninstall" tab.
  222.  
  223. 3.  Highlight "Diskeeper".
  224.  
  225. 4.  Click the "Add/Remove" button.  This removes the 
  226.     Diskeeper program files from your computer.
  227.  
  228. 5.  It may be necessary to manually delete the Diskeeper 
  229.     installation directory.
