- PLATFORMS AND OPERATING SYSTEM VERSIONS SUPPORTED
- =================================================
-
- This version of Diskeeper is supported on Intel x86 platforms
- running Windows NT 4.0 builds 1381 and higher.
-
-
- MAJOR CHANGES IN DISKEEPER 4.0
- ==============================
-
- The following major additions have been made to Diskeeper since
- the previous version released to the public (Version 3.0 Build
- 172):
-
- 1. This version of Diskeeper introduces Boot-Time Paging File
- Fragmentation Reduction. This allows Diskeeper to reduce
- or eliminate paging file fragmentation.
-
- 2. The Boot-Time Directory Consolidation option under the
- Special Tools menu has been changed to Boot-Time Defragmenter.
- The dialog box displayed when this option is selected includes
- the option to Reduce Paging File Fragmentation. This option
- is not selected by default. The same dialog box also includes
- the option to Consolidate Directories, which is also not
- enabled by default.
-
- When you select Reduce Paging File Fragments, Diskeeper checks
- for a recent fragmentation analysis. If one has been run, it
- examines the analysis to see if contiguous space exists for
- paging file defragmentation. If an analysis has not been run
- recently, Diskeeper prompts to ask if an analysis should be
- run. The analysis is necessary before running the Paging File
- Fragmentation Reduction feature.
-
-
- MINOR CHANGES IN DISKEEPER 4.0
- ==============================
-
- The following changes have been made to Diskeeper since the
- previous version released to the public (Version 3.0 Build
- 172):
-
- 1. The date and time of a saved fragmentation analysis is
- now shown when a saved analysis is displayed.
-
- 2. An icon is now displayed in the Windows NT taskbar when
- Diskeeper is actively running on a partition.
-
- 3. Fixes have been made to the Set It and Forget It
- scheduling mechanism to allow Diskeeper to run on the
- same day a schedule is specified. In previous versions,
- if a Set It and Forget It job was scheduled to run
- Everyday from 10:00 to 12:00, and the current time was
- 9:00, the Diskeeper job would not actually start running
- until 10:01 the following day. This has been corrected.
-
- 4. Several access violation bugs have been fixed.
-
- 5. Checks have been added to Diskeeper 4.0 to prevent it
- from running on Windows NT 5.0. This is because Diskeeper
- does not currently support the new NTFS and FAT32 file
- systems.
-
- 6. Checks have been added to prevent Diskeeper 4.0 from
- running on FAT32 partitions under Windows NT 4.0.
-
- 7. Changes have been made to allow Diskeeper to release memory
- that was previously used for the graphic display.
-
- 8. The Boot-Time Directory Consolidation feature now supports
- removable media with cluster sizes up to and including 4096
- bytes.
-
- 9. The opening splash screen now displays correctly in 256
- color mode.
-
-
- KNOWN INCOMPATIBILITIES IN THIS RELEASE
- =======================================
-
- 1. Diskeeper for Windows NT is not compatible with systems
- using the DPT Smart Cache III controller, unless Service
- Pack 1, 2 or 3 for Windows NT 4.0 has been installed. Do
- not run Diskeeper on systems using the DPT Smart Cache
- III controller until you install Service Pack 1, 2 or 3 on
- your Windows NT system.
-
- 2. The on-screen Diskeeper Boot-time Directory Consolidation
- progress information cannot be viewed on your monitor if
- you are using a Diamond Stealth Viper video card or any
- other video card that does not support Windows NT boot-time
- display. You can still, however, record a summary file
- during the Boot-Time Directory Consolidation. See the
- Diskeeper Help system for more information on the Boot-Time
- Summary File.
-
- 3. Diskeeper 4.0 is not compatible with anti-virus products
- that check each file when the file is opened. This behavior,
- found in McAfee and Norton anti-virus tools (as well as
- others), has been known to conflict with the file movement
- methods used by Diskeeper. To prevent a Windows NT "bug
- check" crash, it may be necessary to disable the "active file
- scan" options of these products during a defragmentation run.
-
-
- KNOWN RESTRICTIONS IN THIS RELEASE
- ==================================
-
- 1. At times, the View menu Refresh option to update the tree
- view of the network computers may not reflect the current
- network. This is due to network communication limitations
- in Windows NT.
-
- 2. You cannot use the Network Scheduler to schedule
- defragmentation on a computer to which you are currently
- connected. Use the Partition Scheduler option to schedule
- defragmentation of partitions on the machine you are
- connected to -- use the Network Scheduler option to
- schedule machines you are not connected to.
-
- This means you must be connected to a machine other than
- your local computer (by clicking on a remote computer
- in the Diskeeper network tree view display) if you want
- to use the Network Scheduler to schedule your local
- computer.
-
- 3. Due to Windows NT security issues, it is necessary for you
- to have Administrator privileges on both the local machine
- and any remote computers upon which you set Diskeeper
- schedules. Your account on the remote computer must also
- have the same password as your account on the local machine.
-
- 4. If a remote computer is shut down while Diskeeper Server is
- connected to that computer, you will be unable to re-connect
- Diskeeper to any other computers, including your local
- computer. It may be necessary in such circumstances to use
- the Windows NT Task Manager to end the Diskeeper task.
- After doing this, Diskeeper will operate properly.
-
- 5. On very large partitions, Diskeeper may be unable to analyze
- or defragment the files on the partition, due to memory
- limitations. The exact values for this are determined on a
- case-by-case basis. The size of the partition, the cluster
- size of the partition, the number of files, the degree of
- fragmentation, and other factors affect the amount of system
- memory used by Diskeeper. For example, if a partition exceeds
- 60 GB in size or contains more than 9 million files, system
- memory requirements can exceed 1 GB.
-
-
- REQUIRED PRIVILEGES
- ===================
-
- You must be a member of the Administrators group to install and
- operate Diskeeper.
-
